She was born Diane Hall in Santa Ana, California in 1946. She left her native California for New York to pursue her dream of becoming an actress at nineteen years old. Diane studied acting at Manhattan's Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater and three years later she was starring in the 1968 Broadway sensation "Hair". She then met Woody Allen and they teamed up to star in the stage and screen versions of his script, "Play It Again, Sam". She became Allen's archetypal neurotic New York woman of the seventies. In her career she would go on to star in seven more of Allen's movies.
Her professional and romantic partnership with Allen culminated in a Best Actress Oscar for "Annie Hall" (1977). In this signature role (her real last name is Hall) Keaton's resourceful unisex wardrobe became a major fashion influence and Jewish boys everywhere were enamored by the befuddled thirty-something shiksa. Her portrayal of the awkwardly beautiful "la-di-da" title character didn't go unnoticed and was cast in 1972's mega-hit "The Godfather" and it's sequels. She went on to give a strong performance in the highly acclaimed "Looking for Mr. Goodbar"
Switching love/mentor devotion to Waren Beatty in the early 1980's, Keaton starred in and earned an Oscar nomination for his epic, "Reds". Her next hit was the comedy "Baby Boom" and after almost a decade apart she reunited with Allen for a brief appearance in "Radio Days". Looking for a different challenge she went on to published two photography books and directed a documentary, a music video, a Twin Peaks episode and a cable movie.
In 1993 she was back in a familiar grove with Woody Allen once again in "Manhattan Murder Mystery" where the two actors triumphantly conveyed their old chemistry. In 1995 Keaton's first major feature as a director, "Unstrung Heroes", was well received. 1996 delivered two wonderfully successful roles for Diane. One such role was in "The First Wives Club". A comedic tale of spousal revenge which featured Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. The other in the family drama "Marvin's Room" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep for which she was nominated for an academy award. In 1997 she starred in "The Only Thrill" and in 1999 "The Other Sister".
Diane Keaton is one of those characters that you just gotta love. She is warm and funny and can be downright goofy at times. She has a relaxing quality that she brings to her characters. One can identify with her and all her seemingly self-conscious jitters. She has appeared in over 40 films in her career. Here's to another 40 Dianne!
