biography
Sandra Annette Bullock was born in Arlington, Virginia on July 26th, 1965. Her mother was a German opera singer and her father was a voice coach. The family traveled worldwide while her mother sang at various opera's and Sandra would occasionally perform small parts in her mother's opera's. The family moved back to Virginia when Sandra was 10. She attended the Washington-Lee High School in Arlington where she joined the cheer-leading squad. She was voted "Most Likely to Brighten Your Day" by her senior class and graduated in 1982.
She went on to attend East Carolina University in North Carolina, majoring in drama. However, she moved to New York just 3 credit's short of graduating to study method acting. She found no work in New York so she fled to Los Angeles to try her luck there. Four years after leaving University she landed the starring role in the NBC sitcom "Working Girl," which she would later consider her "quickest flop." She also starred in her first motion picture "Love Potion No. 9." The film didn't bring much success but it did bring her a three year relationship with co-star Tate Donovan.
Her career was on the move and after staring in "Demolition Man" opposite Sylvester Stalone she was cast in "Speed." The movie was a smash hit all over the world, grossing over 120 million dollars at the box office. Sandra stole the show from the larger stars in the film and in-turn became a star herself.
She then moved onto another hit, "While You Were Sleeping" which proved that she could carry a film on her own merit. The movie grossed 85 million, and showed that she could be very funny as well as charming. Next came such movies as "The Net," "Two If By Sea," "A Time To Kill," "In Love and War," and "Speed 2."
She hasn't come this far in perfection, however, as she has stated the lessons she has learned along the way in various interviews. She believes that it is her "I want to do it; I'm going to do it" attitude that has earned her the success and fame she enjoys today. She doesn't appear to have the "I'm famous" bug. When asked in an interview with 48 Hours, "Is it correct to call you a superstar?" Sandra replied, "No it's not." She prefers to refer to herself as an "Actor who happens to be fortunately working a lot." She simply loves what she's doing, and does it well. Perhaps director, Joel Schumacher, sums up what fans believe is true, "I've known Sandra for years. She's one of my favorite people on the planet. To know her is to love her."
