Adam Sandler was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 9th, 1966 but was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. His aptitude for comedy was apparent in his childhood. He was the class clown and loved every minute of it. When Adam was seventeen, he got his first taste of stand up at a nightclub that he was frequenting. With some coaxing from his brother, Adam spontaneously took the stage at the Boston comedy club and found that his talent for making people laugh could be more than just something to do, it could be a career.
While attending New York University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1991, Adam nurtured his comedic talent by appearing at comedy clubs and universities. He landed a recurring role on “The Cosby Show” as Theo Huxtable’s friend Smitty. While working the comedy circuit in L.A. he was discovered by “Saturday Night Live” veteran Dennis Miller. Miller recommended Sandler to S.N.L. producer Lorne Michael. With the recommendation and Adam’s obvious talent, Sandler secured a desired spot on the show in 1990. Although initially he was hired as a writer and an occasional performer, he soon became a regular cast member.
His popularity on S.N.L. was enormous and he remained with the show for five years. While still working on S.N.L. he released his first comedy album entitled “they’re all gonna laugh at you!” in 1993. The debut album won him a Grammy nomination and was secured on Billboard’s charts for well over 100 weeks. Sandler’s early dabbling on the big screen also marked this period. He appeared in such films as “Coneheads”, “Mixed Nuts” and “Airheads”. It wasn’t until “Billy Madison” that Sandler landed a starring role. The show was a hit and so was its co-writer and star, Adam Sandler. With the release of the golfing comedy smash-hit “Happy Gilmore”, Sandler’s popularity soared and so did his asking price per film. He soon landed his next project “Bulletproof”, an action/comedy co-staring Damon Wayons.
His next blockbuster was the hilarious “The Wedding Singer” with the lovely and talented Drew Barrymore. With his next mega hit "The Water Boy" Sandler had secured his place as one of Hollywood's most sought after comedians. The film grossed over $39 million it’s opening weekend.
Sandler's latest release is "Big Daddy". Sandler plays a Slacker/law school graduate who can't seem to get himself motivated until his girlfriend dumps him due to his irresponsibility. He then adopts a child to prove himself to his girlfriend, but suddenly finds himself actually liking the kid.
He is now in the $20 million dollar club of Hollywood. That's how much you'd have to pay to get Sandler to sign a contract for his services. Not bad for a kid from Manchester who spontaneously jumped on a stage with a little coaxing from his brother.
