Bale was born on January 30, 1974 in Pembrokeshire, West Wales the youngest and only boy of four. His older sisters are a musician, a theatre director and a computer business executive.

Bale is dubbed a natural actor and has a talent for accents. In all the roles he has played, you will rarely hear his real accent. Bale started acting at the age of 9 in commercials. He got into the business by tagging along with his theatre director sister to acting workshops. His sister isn't his only tie to the business though. Bale has an uncle who was a lifelong actor, Rex Bale, and both his grandfathers acted. One of his grandfathers was a stunt double for John Wayne during an African shoot.
