Biography

Born in Toronto, Ontario to a journalist/bookstore owner father and a pianist mother, David Cronenberg has introduced fans to his particular brand of horror films. "The Fly", "Crash", "eXistenZ", and " Naked Lunch" are just a few of the films he has directed and written. To the world he is known as the horrormeister. A name he accepts responsibility for.

Cronenberg was born on March 15, 1943 in an artistic family and started writing short stories filled with horror at a young age. So it isn't surprising that his career in the film industry would concentrate on movies that explore the evolution of man and disease. Cronenberg doesn't necessarily see his films as horror movies, some he says (like "Naked Lunch") are unclassifiable.

Cronenberg went to the University of Toronto as an English major. Originally he enrolled as a Biology major but found he wasn't cut out for science and switched to English. He says he was more interested in creating things than trying to make them work. For example, in one of his earlier films he wrote about a skin grafting technique which scientists latter made a reality. As for learning the film business, he learned by doing, since in Canada at that time there was no school that taught you film making.

Cronenberg has three children with his wife Carolyn. His eldest daughter, Cassandra works as an assistant director in the movie business. His son, who is nineteen, has helped him with special effects in his movies, and his youngest, Caitlin, is fifteen. Recently, Caitlin, and Carolyn attended an awards banquet with Cronenberg where he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award.
