Biography

Kelsey Grammer was born February 21st on the United States Virgin Island of St. Thomas. He was raised by his mother and grandfather, first in New Jersey, and later in Florida. His life has been so full of turmoil that he could spend as much time seeing a shrink as he does playing one on TV. At twelve years old his father was shot and killed by a man who was later found not guilty by reason of insanity. His beloved grandfather past away when Grammer was thirteen. When he was twenty his sister was abducted, raped and murdered, and at twenty- five his two half-brothers died in a scuba diving accident of the island of St. Thomas.

Following the death of his grandfather, Grammer found solace in the works of Shakespeare, which fostered his new-found love of the English language. He began acting in a high school production of "The Little Foxes." His English and drama teachers encouraged him to pursue an acting career and was accepted into the Juliard School of Drama. After two years at Juliard he was accepted by the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, and spent the next three years performing in classic works by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw.

Grammer went on to perform in regional theaters across the U.S. and also appeared in Off-Broadway productions of "Plenty," "Sunday in the Park with George," "A Month in the Country" and the Obie Award-winning "Quartermaine's Terms." His Broadway credits include "Macbeth" and "Othello." He recently performed in the title role of "Richard ll" at the Los Angeles Mark Taper Forum.

Grammer has also been in television for a number of years beginning with spots on daytime drama's such as "One Life to Live," "Another World," and "Guiding Light." He also had guest appearances on evening TV programming and mini-series.

His big break came when he was cast as Dr. Frasier Krane on the hit series "Cheers" in 1984. His character was so well received by the viewing public that Grammer was given his own spin off series called "Frasier." He received a Golden Globe nomination and a People's Choice Award as Favorite Male in a New TV series for his performance during the first season of "Frasier." He has also had success on the big screen with movies such as "Down Periscope."

Although his professional career has been blessed with success the private life of Kelsey Grammer has not been as fortunate. In 1988 he was busted for drunken driving and cocaine possession. He was later re-arrested and sentenced to thirty days in jail in 1990 when he failed to show up for two arraignments nor at his court-ordered community service.

The women in Grammer's life haven't provided much comfort either. After he accused his last wife with assault, she attempted suicide using Tylenol and wine but suffered a miscarriage instead and went on to spill her story to Inside Edition. The next scandalous affair was when a tabloid got a-hold of a story involving Grammer and an under-aged baby-sitter whose parents threatened to charge him with statutory rape. Grammer, however, denies ever being alone with the girl. Then in September on 1996 he rolled his sports car in another alcohol-related incident and was formally charged with driving with an expired license rather than for drunken driving. He miraculously escaped the accident without series injury but it was a wake-up call for him and he voluntarily admitted himself into the Betty Ford Center for treatment before returning to work on his television series "Frasier"
