Biography

One of Canada's most famous figure skaters, Kurt Browning, grew up in the shadows of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He was born on June 18, 1966 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and was raised in Caroline, Alberta. Both towns are in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and it is no wonder that a child of this land would achieve fame. Kurt is a four time world champion (1989-91, '93), three time world professional champion, four time Canadian professional champion (1989-91, '93), and two time US professional champion in figure skating. He also is "credited by the International Skating Union (ISU) with completing the first quadruple jump (a toe loop) in competition at the 1988 World Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary."

Kurt's parents Dewey (Arnold) and Neva Browning were married for fifty years until the death of his mother Neva in June of 2000. Kurt has two siblings, a brother Wade (11 years older) and a sister Dena ( 9 years older). Kurt married ballet dancer Sonia Rodriguez in June of 1996. He is affectionately known as "The Kid From Caroline".

Kurt is so loved for his accomplishments that he was awarded the privilege of carrying the Canadian flag during the 1994 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Lillehammer, Norway. Kurt was also awarded Canada's highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada and was named Canada's Athlete of the year twice. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and elected to the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1999. For his famous first quadruple jump during competition, Kurt was entered into the Guinness Book of Records. Though Kurt no longer competes, he takes part still in the figure skating world and can be seen from time to time in "Stars on Ice".
