Biography

Michael Andrew Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1961. He began his professional acting career at age 15 on Canadian Broadcasting Company series "Leo and Me". After moving to Los Angeles at age 18, he was overlooked by casting agents because of his slight 5'4"frame. He did, however, land a few guest appearances on series such as "Trapper John, M.D.", "Lou Grant" and "Night Court" but it wasn't until he was cast in the television sitcom "Family Ties" that Michael's career would sky rocket. His portrayal of Alex Keaton, the teen-aged capitalist won him three Emmys and the show was a seven-year success.

In 1985, he landed the staring role in the blockbuster hit "Back to the Future". His schedule was chaotic but it didn't deter him from giving an astounding performance. A typical day meant reporting to Paramount Studios for his taping of "Family Ties" from 10am to 6pm, and then off to Universal for "Back to the Future" from 6:30pm to 2:30am every weekday except Friday. Friday's were when things really got hectic. "Family Ties" taped in front of a live audience. This meant rehearsal from noon until 5pm, perform two tapings, and then report to Universal at 10pm where they would film until 6am or 7am. He would have the weekend to recuperate and start it all over again the following Monday.

Michael married Tracy Pollan (his first girlfriend on "Family Ties") in 1998. In 1989-90 he filmed two "Back to the Future" sequels, back to back. If filming a movie and TV sitcom at the same time wasn't enough, he now had the delightful distraction of the imminent birth of his first child. Fortunately the baby's timing was as keen as his fathers, and Sam arrived after Michael completed filming "Family Ties".

Fox tried his hand in a more dramatic role in 1989's "Casualties of War. Although he gave a strong performance, the public didn't accept his attempt to switch from funny guy to serious dramatic actor. The film crashed, as did his next four flicks. He recaptured little of his lost popularity with "The American President" and "Mars Attacks!". Michael fared substantially better on the small screen with a new television sitcom "Spin City". He plays a New York City wheeler-dealer Deputy Mayor.

On February 15th, 1995, Michael and Tracy welcomed twin daughters to their family. In November 1998, Fox made public that for the past seven years, he had been secretly battling Parkinson's disease. In spite of being afflicted with the crippling nerve disease, he remains positive about his future. He believes that a cure will be found by the time that he is fifty. For now, Fox's "family ties" are in New York, where he, Tracy, and their 3 children call home.
