Eldrick Woods was born on December 30th, 1975 in Cypress, California to Earl and Kultida Woods. His ethnic background is a melting pot. His father is ½ African American, ¼ American Indian and ¼ Chinese. His mother is ½ Tai, ¼ Chinese, and ¼ Caucasian. He was nicknamed "Tiger" after a Vietnamese soldier who was a friend of his father's in Vietnam.
He began golfing at a very young age with his father's never-ending presence and encouragement. He started to show an interest in golf at 6 months old while watching his father swing a club and imitating him. He appeared on the Mike Douglas Show at age 2, putting with Bob Hope. He shot 48 for nine holes at the age of three and was featured in Golf Digest at 5. He won the Optimist International Junior tournament six times at ages 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, and 15. After mastering the amateur world of golf by winning the U.S. Junior amateur three times in a row (1991-1993) as well as the U.S. amateur three times in a row (1994, 1996), he decided it was time to turn pro.
His first pro tournament took place at the Greater Milwaukee Open, in which he tied for 60th place. His first win was the Los Vegas Invitational in which he defeated Davis Love lll in sudden death. His victories are too many to mention although he became the youngest-ever #1 golfer at the age of 21 years old. The previous youngest was Bernhard Langer, age 29 years.
In his third full season as a professional, 1999, Woods won eight times on the PGA TOUR, including the PGA Championship, and earned $6,616,585. He had a margin of $2,974,679 over runnerup David Duval, a figure greater than the previous single-year PGA TOUR record. His dominance was such that Woods won an astounding 52% of all the prize money he could have won. He won 81.7% more than the runnerup, the highest margin since Byron Nelson in 1945(87.2%) and Ben Hogan in 1946 (85%) He was the first to have as many as eight PGA TOUR victories in one year since Johnny Miller won eight in 1974.
He achieved the highest points average (20.61) in the history of the World Ranking in1999, and the largest margin over his closest rival (7.46 points) Leading Duval by that amount on Noember7. His 750 points earned in 1999 were also a record.
In 2000 he has also broken records and most recently has won one of the highest ranks in golf. He has won four major titles in one year giving him "The Grand Slam" of golf.
