Biography

Tim Roth was born in London, England on May 14th, 1961. His father was a journalist and his mother a landscape painter. Tim shared the love of art with his mother. Tim initially enrolled in London’s Camberwell School of Art in hopes of becoming a sculptor, but instead his interest turned toward acting. His first appearance was in a production of Jean Genet’s “The Screens” and followed with his television debut in 1981’s made for TV movie “Made in Britain” which produced rave reviews for the young actor.

It was in 1984 that Roth landed his film debut. It was in Stephen Frears’ “The Hit” which co-stared Terence Stamp and John Hurt. The film did reasonably well but Roth’s performance was spectacular and he won an Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He continued to find work and in 1990 he began enjoying limited international attention thanks to his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in “Vincent and Theo” and a title role in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.”

By this time Roth had made a name for himself as an actor and had caught the eye of director Quinten Tarantino. Tarantino cast Roth as an undercover cop in 1992’s “Reservoir Dogs.” The success of “Reservoir Dogs” afforded Roth the opportunity for more work in Hollywood. His next project was in a drastic variance from his previous work. It was in the 1993 comedy “Bodies, Rest and Motion” with Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Eric Stoltz.

The next year found Roth returning to more familiar territory as a hit man in “Little Odessa.” He also landed a part in another of Tarantino’s hits “Pulp Fiction.” Inevitably his next few films didn’t do as well at the box office at the previous one’s. Things turned around in a big way for Roth in 1995 and he earned the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, a Golden Globe nomination, and a British Academy Award for his performance in “Rob Roy.” Since then Roth has kept busy acting in films such as Woody Allen’s “Everyone Says I Love You,” “No Way Home,” “Gridlock’d,” and “Liar.” 1998 he made his directorial debut in “The War Zone” starring Ray Winstone, Tilda Swinton, Freddie Cunliffe, and Lara Belmont.
